This thesis discusses the use of black humour as a method to portray controversial topics, focusing particularly on animal rights. Can black humour be utilized in this context without impairing the idea of animal rights? Is traditional oil painting suitable for this purpose?
The thesis consists of a series of paintings accompanied by a theoretical overview. The themes under scrutiny include, for instance, the essence of black humour and its potential in the visual arts and in art-education. The idea of visual impact and the representation of suffering are also looked into.
