My master’s thesis is a concept and design for a new asylum seeker’s reception centre in Helsinki.
The oldest of Helsinki’s refugee reception, Kyläsaari, was founded in 1996. It is structurally at the end of its life span and the new Kalasatama area will expand to its current site in the 2020s.
The aim of the thesis is to design the best possible living conditions for the asylum seekers. The spatial ideas can be taken into consideration also when designing regular housing with the aim of increasing the sense of community.
The work is partly based on my work in the City of Helsinki Social Services Department, but the thesis is an independent, academic project.
