Design is generally seen to bring competitive advantage on the market place, but few have studied its wider impact in generating company value. This research combines two traditionally separate fields of research – design management and intangible capital theory – to understand designs relevance in building corporate value both through theory and case study analysis.
The first part of the research establishes through theory how design builds the intangible capital of a company. In addition to this, a method to demonstrate the effect of active use of design has on the level of intangible assets is developed. Finally indicative results based on a multiple case study are obtained on whether active users of design tend to have higher portion of intangible capital.
